Project 4

1) This project was a very simple text based adventure, which means it is a game where you choose which paths you take but instead of graphics giving you a description, it uses words. The applications I used are the same as ever; The Terminal to run and test the program, g-edit to write the program and within g-edit I was using the programming language python. I was able to meet all the requirements given for these projects.

2)The topic that I used and incorporated the most was: Creativity and Innovation (Make it!). The reason I used this more then the other topic choices was the fact that this was a "from scratch" project, and besides following the template given by the book, I made this project all by myself. That it itself is creativity as well as innovation. The second thing is the fact that I had to basically write the beginning to a book.

3) This project taught me one thing very well; even small programs take a lot of code and a lot of time to make. If you run this code it would only take you 5 minutes to run and play the whole game. But if you look at the code it is over 53 lines of solid code which took me 3 whole days to make.

4) The thing I'm most proud of, is the fact that this project is the first real game I've ever made. This is especially interesting because of the fact that I've wanted to make my own game for as long as I can remember. I know this is only a text based game, and a very short one at that but the point still remains.

5) If i were to start over I would make it longer. I would not do anything over again but if I had more time I would make it longer. Make the doors go further on into more rooms. I could possibly add a third option for each problem presented.

6) Here is a link to the code. Go to the page and click on "Project4.py" To run just download, then run off the terminal. It runs in the terminal itself.

Project 3

1) This project was a test over the material I have covered over the last 3 weeks. This test consisted of me taking a poorly constructed code that was not in working order, and fixing it. The programs I used are the same I've used before; the terminal, and g-edit. I used the terminal to actually run the program and for de-bugging and I used g-edit to edit the program. I was able to meet all the requirements.

2) The topic that my project incorporates the most is Communication and Collaboration. First of all I took the messed up program from the books website so the project in essence itself was collaboration. Also programming is all about communication, it is impossible to program without communication, or at least it would be very, very hard.

3) By doing this project I learned that people naturally make mistakes when programming, and if they say they don't, they are lying. I also learned that collaboration as well as communication are some of the most important tools at a programmers disposal. Without it, programming would be very hard, and learning how to program would be incredibly difficult.

4)What I am most proud of in this project is the fact that the author warned this exercise would be very hard, and I found it relatively easy, and not very time consuming. I think this means I am ready to advance to the next part of the book.

5) Regarding the question as to what I would improve if I were to start over; this was less of a project then a test, and on top of that a test that cannot be graded. With this in mind, I took the test to the best of my abilities , so I do not believe I could alter it to be better without learning more and therefore cheating. The only way I could improve is by completing it faster.

6) Below are the images of the before and after program. If you click on the links above them you can see a close up so that it is readable. If you would like to see the new program in action, click on this link (http://azrathud.com/larry/), click "Project 3" and download the files, then just run in terminal.

P.S. This is the source for the before pictures.
It is from the books website.

Project two.

This project is a program that takes a specified file, deletes the contents, then lets you rewrite the contents of the file.I used the system import command to import variable commands, as well as the time function. I used the target command, as well as input variables specified by the user. The applications I used are the same ones I used last time; the terminal which I use to run, and test, the program. I also used the g-edit text editor, to actually write the program. I was able to meet all the requirements for this project.

The E.L. that was incorporated most in my project was Research Fluency and Information Fluency. I had to do a lot of research to get this program to run as well as to add in some functions.

Completing this project taught me several new aspects of programming, including the many different functions that can be imported into a program using python commands.

I most proud of two things with this project, first of all that it is a whopping 112 line program and secondly that I made it with little help of the book, even going so far as to use a function I looked up on my own.

If I had to start over, the way I would improve upon my project is instead of using repeat commands I would assign each command a variable. That way I could shorten the program a bit and I wouldn't have to type as much. To zoom in on the pictures (source code above, program running below) Click the links. If you would like to run the program yourself go here: http://azrathud.com/larry/project2.py right click, and save. Then run in the terminal. Be warned this program is meant to delete a file. Use caution.

Project one.

This project was a Mad Libs using input provided by the user and input variables. To create this, I used the terminal, as well as the gedit text editor with the language python. The El I used the most was creativity and innovation. I had to be creative to come up with my own mad libs as well as innovative to use the "raw_input()" command the turn whatever the user typed into a usable format. From this project, I learned that its way harder then it looks to program as there are so many variables from the user and the program itself that can go wrong. I'm most proud of the fact of the fact that this is my first real project I made on my own.If I were to start this project over again I would add more variables and make a bigger story to make it better.
To access this code go to http://azrathud.com/larry/project1.py. To actually see the program in action just right click on that page and save. Then run the program from where you saved it to. The pictures below are, in order, the source code, and the actual program running. To see a close up of the images just follow the links below.

Goals for this class.

My goals for this class are simple; a two part plan. The first step is to read "Learn Python The Hard Way" by Zed A. Shaw and follow his exercises. During this step I will do 11 of my 12 required projects. These projects will include a explaining, in brief, what I learned from the exercises that week and also presenting any programs I have made. This will lead into the last 2 or 3 weeks in class where I will work on my final project; a game I will make using python. By this time I will have read the whole book so I should be learned enough to do this. When I complete my game I will make a presentation to present it all.

Sugata's SOLEs.

I believe Sugata conducted this experiment for two reasons. One, he had a lot of University funding . Two, he must have some interest in this subject or interest in making the world a better place. This video definitely changed what I think about possibilities in regards to self-learning. I think it is unbelievable how 9 to 10 year old children who didn't speak English could learn so much from just 2 months and a computer. I think that if he gets his requested materials he could change the way people teach and the way people learn in a huge way. These experiments may change the way I learn on my own.

Learning.

Question: Do you think you can teach yourself anything.

Yes I do think I can teach myself things or else I would not be in a Independent Study course. I think half of learning is done by the person learning on there own. The person needs to make connections and predictions or else it is not really learning. So, to summarize, yes I can teach myself, and yes I think everyone can teach themselves.
