Final presentation.

My final project was a screen cast explaining the applications used.

Project 11.

1. This project was an almost silly one which gives advice based on the input of the temperature by the user. This project is not very practical but it is funny. The applications I used are the same as ever; g-edit for writing the program and the terminal for running it.

2. The idea used in this project was "Creativity and Innovation (Make it!)" Because this was definatly a creative funny project.

3. This project taught me that programming doesn't always have to be 100% serious.

4. I am most proud of the fact that this projects will make people laugh even though it is still serious programming.

5. If I were to start over I would make a few more phrases that make this project even more funny.

6. To run this program go to this and click on "project11.py" Easy enough.

Project 10

1. This is the the 3rd and final project in the "utility series" This project is a calculator with basic math functions without need of internet connection. This program will take user input and spit back out the answer in a simple form. The applications I used are the same as ever; g-edit for writing the program and the terminal for running it.

2. The idea that was used the most, as previously mentioned , will be the same as the last two in the utility series; "Basic Operations and Concepts (Use It)" As with the other ones, this idea most embellishes this project because this project uses basic concepts and ideas in a practical manner.

3. I learned that a full basic calculator is not that hard to make surprisingly, as it took very little effort.

4. I am most proud of the fact that I made a working calculator by myself. That in itself says something.

5.If i were to start over I would make the calculator have more functions like cos tan and sin.

6. To see and run this project go to this website and click on "project 10". This will start by itself.

Project 9

1. This project is yet another of my "utility series" of practical programs for everyday uses. This program is the shortest I have ever made. It is ment to be a very quick and easy way to read the programming contents of a file. This can be as useful as one can make it. The applications I used are the same as ever; g-edit for writing the program and the terminal for running it.

2. The idea used most in this series of utility programs is yet again "Basic Operations and Concepts (Use It)" because the concepts used are very basic but very useful in the real world for practical purposes. This will probably be the same for the next couple of projects.

3. I learned that no matter how practical and useful a project is, it can still be very short. This project is 6 lines long. Yes, 6.

4. I am most proud of the fact that I made a practical and useful project with only 6 line of code!

5. I would make the program open another tap with the contents of the file in it instead of just inside the terminal

6. To see and use this program go to this website and click on "project 9.py" The program should automatically download and then you can run it on your computer.

Project 8

1.This project is the first in a set of utility programs. This specific project is an easy was to copy files as many times as you wish. The applications I used are the same as ever; g-edit for writing the program and the terminal for running it.

2. The idea that was used was "Basic Operations and Concepts (Use It)". This was because of the fact that this was a simple utility project and basic nothing to extraordinary or extreme. This is considered a basic concept.

3. This project taught me that a basic utility program can actually use very few lines. I used about 25 lines for this project and that is very little compared to the other projects.

4. I'm proud of the fact that I can now very quickly make a practical program for everyday uses.

5. If I were to do this project over again I would make the program copy and maybe create a simple backup that would store in case of file corruption.
'
6. To see and run this program click on this website and click on "project 8". The download should start then.

Project 7

1. This project was a generator that randomly generates one of three things; a number, letter or poem. What the program generates is dependent on what the user enters. There are several poems, 20 numbers and the full alphabet. This is a very user friendly program with simple controls that are easy to use. The applications I used are the same as ever, the terminal for testing and running, and g-edit to write the program.

2.The idea that was incorporated the most in this project was "Creativity and Innovation (Make it!)" because this whole project was just grinding it out and creating. There was a small aspect of creativity but mostly just pure creation and innovation because I haven't made anything like it.

3.This project taught me that when you have had enough experience, programming is easy, while still time consuming. This project was easy for me and I think that is a good sign of my progress. I hardly if ever had to look at my book, so I almost made this project 100% by myself.

4.I'm most proud of the fact that I had no problems creating this program, and this is the first time this has happened with me. It was 100% easy and I feel as if this is a turning point for me. I completed this project in a very short amount of time as well as it being a fairly complicated project, and that was awesome for me.

5. If i were to restart this project and had to make it better I would add more numbers, poems, and letters. I would add 1-100 in the numbers section, at 5-8 more poems, and maybe double letter e.g AA, AB, AC, etc. This would just increase the variation of the generated item .

6.To see, and run this program head to this website and click on "project7.py" . This will start a download of the file from which you can run in your terminal. Enjoy!

Project 6

1. This project was a very simple program that reads off a poem using several programming mechanics including escaping characters and the time function. In its most basic form the program is just a virtual book reader, but underneath its shell, it has a complex system of timing. The applications I use are the same as they always are. Terminal for testing and running the program and g-edit for writing the code.

2.The idea that was incorporated the most into this project was "Basic Operations and Concepts (Use It)". This was because the concepts I used in this project were basic programming concepts, but I used them in a more advanced manner. In this way, this is a basic operation and concept, but again, I used them in an advanced manner fitting of my knowledge in python.

3.This project taught me that timing is very important in a user friendly program because you cannot just pile on all the information you have to the reader at once as it will overwhelm them. You need to give a small amount of information at a time to keep the flow good and now overwhelming. This is a large portion of user friendly programming.

4.The aspect I am most proud of in this project is the fact that the flow and the amount of information given to the user at once is perfect. I achieved this through actual user tests to gauge how fast people read and thus how much information to present at once.

5. If I were to start over the only thing I would change for the better is present more the of the poem to actually give all of the poem in the program. This would not be hard, but I would need more time.

6. To see and even use my program you need to go to this website[http://azrathud.com/larry/] and click on "project 6.py". When you click on that you will get a download option, you will need to click yes. That's it, from there just run the program.Enjoy!

Project 5

1. This project was a pretty large, more advanced text based adventure game. The reason this text based adventure was more advanced then previous ones was the fact that the input is more then just "yes" and "no". The input method can be up to a full sentence! The applications used are the same as ever; the terminal for testing and gedit for the writing.

2. The topic that my project relates to most is "Creativity and Innovation(Make it!)" The reasoning behind this is the fact that the project is basically a story with holes in it that the player has to fill. This means I have to write a small adventure story with multiple endings and in my book that is creativity.

3. This project taught me that no matter how short the actually game is, the amount of code for the game will be 3-4x as long as the game itself, this project being no exception. This project code is 121 lines long while the game itself is much shorter. It also takes a lot more time to make the game then it does to play it.

4.I am most proud of the fact that that once the project was completed, it ran without errors the first time. This is amazing because it means that I did not misspell any programming aspects of the code. This is very rare for all programmers, and especially me as a new programmer. Normally you have to test and fix your code.

5. I am pretty happy with this project but if I was forced to go back and somehow make it better I would go back and make it longer. This would mean that I would have to make the story line longer somehow with multiple endings or maybe have it branch off into another story.

6. To see and play my project you will need to go to this [http://azrathud.com/larry/] website and click on the download link "project5.py". This will give you my project. Play it, and have fun! I would also like some feedback which you can leave on this post. Thank you!

Project 4

1) This project was a very simple text based adventure, which means it is a game where you choose which paths you take but instead of graphics giving you a description, it uses words. The applications I used are the same as ever; The Terminal to run and test the program, g-edit to write the program and within g-edit I was using the programming language python. I was able to meet all the requirements given for these projects.

2)The topic that I used and incorporated the most was: Creativity and Innovation (Make it!). The reason I used this more then the other topic choices was the fact that this was a "from scratch" project, and besides following the template given by the book, I made this project all by myself. That it itself is creativity as well as innovation. The second thing is the fact that I had to basically write the beginning to a book.

3) This project taught me one thing very well; even small programs take a lot of code and a lot of time to make. If you run this code it would only take you 5 minutes to run and play the whole game. But if you look at the code it is over 53 lines of solid code which took me 3 whole days to make.

4) The thing I'm most proud of, is the fact that this project is the first real game I've ever made. This is especially interesting because of the fact that I've wanted to make my own game for as long as I can remember. I know this is only a text based game, and a very short one at that but the point still remains.

5) If i were to start over I would make it longer. I would not do anything over again but if I had more time I would make it longer. Make the doors go further on into more rooms. I could possibly add a third option for each problem presented.

6) Here is a link to the code. Go to the page and click on "Project4.py" To run just download, then run off the terminal. It runs in the terminal itself.

Project 3

1) This project was a test over the material I have covered over the last 3 weeks. This test consisted of me taking a poorly constructed code that was not in working order, and fixing it. The programs I used are the same I've used before; the terminal, and g-edit. I used the terminal to actually run the program and for de-bugging and I used g-edit to edit the program. I was able to meet all the requirements.

2) The topic that my project incorporates the most is Communication and Collaboration. First of all I took the messed up program from the books website so the project in essence itself was collaboration. Also programming is all about communication, it is impossible to program without communication, or at least it would be very, very hard.

3) By doing this project I learned that people naturally make mistakes when programming, and if they say they don't, they are lying. I also learned that collaboration as well as communication are some of the most important tools at a programmers disposal. Without it, programming would be very hard, and learning how to program would be incredibly difficult.

4)What I am most proud of in this project is the fact that the author warned this exercise would be very hard, and I found it relatively easy, and not very time consuming. I think this means I am ready to advance to the next part of the book.

5) Regarding the question as to what I would improve if I were to start over; this was less of a project then a test, and on top of that a test that cannot be graded. With this in mind, I took the test to the best of my abilities , so I do not believe I could alter it to be better without learning more and therefore cheating. The only way I could improve is by completing it faster.

6) Below are the images of the before and after program. If you click on the links above them you can see a close up so that it is readable. If you would like to see the new program in action, click on this link (http://azrathud.com/larry/), click "Project 3" and download the files, then just run in terminal.

Project two.

This project is a program that takes a specified file, deletes the contents, then lets you rewrite the contents of the file.I used the system import command to import variable commands, as well as the time function. I used the target command, as well as input variables specified by the user. The applications I used are the same ones I used last time; the terminal which I use to run, and test, the program. I also used the g-edit text editor, to actually write the program. I was able to meet all the requirements for this project.

The E.L. that was incorporated most in my project was Research Fluency and Information Fluency. I had to do a lot of research to get this program to run as well as to add in some functions.

Completing this project taught me several new aspects of programming, including the many different functions that can be imported into a program using python commands.

I most proud of two things with this project, first of all that it is a whopping 112 line program and secondly that I made it with little help of the book, even going so far as to use a function I looked up on my own.

If I had to start over, the way I would improve upon my project is instead of using repeat commands I would assign each command a variable. That way I could shorten the program a bit and I wouldn't have to type as much. To zoom in on the pictures (source code above, program running below) Click the links. If you would like to run the program yourself go here: http://azrathud.com/larry/project2.py right click, and save. Then run in the terminal. Be warned this program is meant to delete a file. Use caution.

Project one.

This project was a Mad Libs using input provided by the user and input variables. To create this, I used the terminal, as well as the gedit text editor with the language python. The El I used the most was creativity and innovation. I had to be creative to come up with my own mad libs as well as innovative to use the "raw_input()" command the turn whatever the user typed into a usable format. From this project, I learned that its way harder then it looks to program as there are so many variables from the user and the program itself that can go wrong. I'm most proud of the fact of the fact that this is my first real project I made on my own.If I were to start this project over again I would add more variables and make a bigger story to make it better.
To access this code go to http://azrathud.com/larry/project1.py. To actually see the program in action just right click on that page and save. Then run the program from where you saved it to. The pictures below are, in order, the source code, and the actual program running. To see a close up of the images just follow the links below.

Goals for this class.

My goals for this class are simple; a two part plan. The first step is to read "Learn Python The Hard Way" by Zed A. Shaw and follow his exercises. During this step I will do 11 of my 12 required projects. These projects will include a explaining, in brief, what I learned from the exercises that week and also presenting any programs I have made. This will lead into the last 2 or 3 weeks in class where I will work on my final project; a game I will make using python. By this time I will have read the whole book so I should be learned enough to do this. When I complete my game I will make a presentation to present it all.

Sugata's SOLEs.

I believe Sugata conducted this experiment for two reasons. One, he had a lot of University funding . Two, he must have some interest in this subject or interest in making the world a better place. This video definitely changed what I think about possibilities in regards to self-learning. I think it is unbelievable how 9 to 10 year old children who didn't speak English could learn so much from just 2 months and a computer. I think that if he gets his requested materials he could change the way people teach and the way people learn in a huge way. These experiments may change the way I learn on my own.

Learning.

Question: Do you think you can teach yourself anything.

Yes I do think I can teach myself things or else I would not be in a Independent Study course. I think half of learning is done by the person learning on there own. The person needs to make connections and predictions or else it is not really learning. So, to summarize, yes I can teach myself, and yes I think everyone can teach themselves.

Essential Learnings

Basic Operations and Concepts
I will have to learn the advanced inner operations and commands of the computer. I will also need to learn and use many advanced keyboard shortcuts. I will also have to learn about and use many applications, as well as using online resources for help. The whole process of programing is very keyboard centered so I will naturally increase my typing ability.

Digital Citizenship
Going online for help should be used with caution and only on trusted sites. When downloading applications needed only trusteed sources will be used. Any work done must be my own and not plagiarized.

Creativity and Innovation
I will be using a number of digital resources to help me but mainly the programing will done of my own ideas and creatively. Unfortunately early programing will not use much pictures and sound but there is other ways to express creativity through programing.

Communication and Collaboration
Telecommunication tools are extremely important in programing because communication with other programers is. I will use tools such as email and blogs to communicate with fellow students who program for help and the sharing of knowledge.

Research and Information Fluency
The single most important tool to a programer is internet research. I will often utilize tools such as Google, Wikipedia and many others. i will have to use Boolean logic often.

Problem Solving and Decision Making
As a programer I will often need to problem solve by myself to have a working program. Decisions will be made on how I program as there are many different paths I can choose each with its own pros and cons. I will compare these pros and cons and different information.
